You are warmly invited to the opening reception of North Side: Marilyn Quaedvlieg
I was born and raised in Edmonton, and my work is deeply inspired by a lifelong connection to Alberta’s landscapes and built history. I am drawn to the stories embedded in familiar places—historic buildings, neighbourhood landmarks, and natural scenes that quietly define our sense of belonging. Through painting and mixed media, I seek to honour both their beauty and their resilience.
Working primarily in watercolour, ink, coloured pencil, and acrylic, my style balances realism and impressionism. I am especially interested in how line, colour, and texture can convey memory and atmosphere. My North Side series, begun in 2018, focuses on Edmonton’s overlooked and often forgotten historic buildings—structures that have played meaningful roles in my life and in the community, and that deserve to be remembered.
My artistic practice is informed by formal training at the Shepy School of Fine Art and the Edmonton Art Gallery. Always active in the field of visual arts, I gathered further hands‑on experience in sculpture, pottery, carving, and stained glass. As a skilled stained-glass artisan, I also instructed for several years with Edmonton Continuing Education.
After retiring from a career in finance, I fully embraced painting as my primary creative pursuit. I continue to explore new directions, including a current floral series in acrylics, and I welcome opportunities to create commissioned works that celebrate meaningful places and personal connections.
