Artist Statment:

Color, rhythm, contrast, and forces of nature, all contribute towards the inspiration for my paintings. When I paint and express myself through art, I am able to experience a euphoric feeling of freedom and contentment. My paintings are characterized by vivid colors and bold expressive brush strokes. I rely on my Ukrainian heritage, extensive travel, nature, and my surrounding environment for inspiration. I believe that we are all drawn to original works of art because they represent and radiate the soul and spirit of the individual who created it.  Thus, through my artwork I strive to share my life and my spirit with others.

Call for Artist Submissions: Chalk It Up on 118

On July 23rd, 2016 The Carrot is hosting Chalk it up on 118th. This event will feature community activities, performances, a free pancake breakfast, and chalk artwork along the roadway and sidewalk outside the coffeehouse. We are looking for a few chalk artists to create unique chalk artworks during this event. This opportunity will be a fun way to show off your skills and engage with the community.

Artist who are selected:

• will create a chalk artwork during the event between 10:00am-3:00pm on July 23, 2016
• will receive a $50 honorarium.

Submit by July 10th, 2016 at 11:59pm

Interested artist should submit the following items by email to Karen McGale at: aotaproject@gmail.com

• A paragraph describing your idea for the chalk artwork you intend to create during the event. This can just be a general idea. You also should expect to fill a relatively large area of the roadway or sidewalk but there is no need to include too much specifics (such a dimensions) in your description as this will be determined by the space you are assigned on the day of the event.
• 5 to 10 example of your art. These images should showcase your skill level. Choose works that show your ability to paint or illustrate and this is most related to chalk artwork. You are also welcome to create a sketch of the idea you plan to execute at the event but this is not required.
• A CV that includes a short history of your artistic experience and your contact information

Selected artist will be contacted at least a week before the event

Featured Artist: Jay Bigam

July Gallery:

The Carrot is happy to present Jay's abstract landscape paintings during the month of July! Drop by before July 30 to view and purchase one of these great pieces! 

Jay is a self-taught artist who paints abstract landscapes, skyscapes and spacescapes. Known for his use of colour and movement, his paintings are a reflection of his love of nature and science.

Quote from the artist:

“My work is inspired by the landscape, sky, water and ice of a place, and especially of my home, Alberta. I try to capture the feeling and not a literal representation. I am particularly inspired by the sunset. The grand light at the end of the day, reflecting upon clouds, the landscape and the falling off to the deep indigo of the night sky. We are all familiar with the saying, “In Alberta, if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.” I use colour and movement to try to capture the sense of change we see on a daily and even minute by minute basis, whether it be the slow movement of a glacier, a violent summer storm or a lingering summer sunset.”

Spring Pub Night Fundraiser!

Grab your party hat and join us Friday, June 10 for our annual Pub Night fundraiser from 7 pm – 11 pm.

The Parkdale Cromdale Community League (11335 - 85 street) will be hosting us for the evening. Tickets are $20 which includes delicious finger foods, a silent auction, live entertainment and an Arts on the Ave membership! Food is prepared by our own Mary Ann who is our Carrot Operations Manager and Red Seal chef! It's going to be delicious!! And of course, being a pub night - there will also be a cash bar available.

Featured Artist: Nicole Deibert

The Carrot is pleased to show Nicole's interesting and unique art during the month of June! Drop by before June 30 to view and purchase one of her pieces! 

Background

Nicole Deibert is the Head Scenic Artist at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. She also is a professional photographer who has a passion to find old trucks and cars and photograph them.

These gel transfers are Nicole’s photographs with enhancements done with acrylic paint. The paintings are her interpretations of those same photographs. With College diplomas from Grant MacEwan in Theatre Production and Digital Arts & Media, Nicole also briefly attended Alberta College of Art before returning to pursue her theatre training. Nicole is also a grad from Victoria School of the Arts where she first learned her deep appreciation for painting and the need to be creative.

Featured Artist: Karen Bishop

The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse and Arts on the Ave is excited to feature an acrylic mixed media gallery for the month of May!  The gallery features the works of artist Karen Bishop who uses water colour to create beautiful images of the natural environment.

Background

My work is not intended to be a faithful reproduction of the landscape before me.  Instead I paint by feel.  The paintings that evoke the most emotion are those completed on location where I am able to allow my surroundings and the weather to dictate how I proceed.  I try not to worry about the ending, rather I let the painting unfold and track its own course across my paper.
For me painting allows that perfect quiet, where I am peaceful and at peace with myself, and my surroundings.  It’s an escape from the everyday, a chance to experience the earth more fully, a chance to breathe and know that all is well.
To put it simply, I paint because it makes me happy. My hope is that the viewer can find a similar joy and peace in my work.

I was born in Cheltenham, England, in 1968 and moved to Kingston, Ontario, in the winter of 1992. When I first arrived in Canada I was unable to work while I waited for my papers, so I made use of the time by enrolling in some art classes which I enjoyed very much.  In 2002 I graduated from the University of Alberta’s Extension centre with a Fine Arts certificate.  Since 2007 I have been pursuing my art full time and in May of 2011 I opened The Daffodil Gallery in the heart of Edmonton’s Gallery district which sadly closed early 2016.
