Nehiyawak - A People of the Land: Len Cardinal

Gallery Exhibition Date: June 1 - June 27, 2026
Opening Reception: June 9, 7:00 PM | The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse (9351 - 118 Ave)

You are warmly invited to the opening reception for Len Cardinal.

First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Len Cardinal and I am apart of "Treaty 6" traditional lands and territory as well as been a member of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation #125.

I wanted to show a different narrative about my personal journey through healing and self recognition of who I am as an indigenous person, of who we are as people and why we belong in today's society. Nehiyawak - meaning "people." I wanted to underscore the interconnectiveness of a way of life and show our people's side of pride, their spirit, strength of identity through my paintings.

We have come a long way from the days of when our ancestors were nomadic, and moving camps for various reasons. As I continue to grow in my understanding of indigenous traditions and our connections to the land, it has impacted my life in a good way. I may not tell stories but I wanted to express a record of a souls journey.

This self-taught uke player uses songwriting as both anchor and compass, navigating life’s twists and turns with warmth, honesty, and a touch of the offbeat. Canada raised her, Germany shaped her, and somewhere in between Marie Fontaine found her ukulele-driven indie folk sound, rooted in storytelling and connection. Raised in a creative family, she grew up on French chanson and artists like Kate Bush and Rickie Lee Jones. Since 2015, she’s become a familiar face in Edmonton’s scene, with highlights including a Nashville retreat with Andrea Stolpe, performing with WriteOn! at the Calgary folk club, The Rocky Mountain Listeing Room, the WriteOn showcase at the Ironwood Stage & Grill, The Key of Me at SkirtsAfire Festival 2026, and her 2026 release “Big Valley Jail.”

Carrot Gallery - Closing Reception

New Expressions: Jeff Collins

Gallery Exhibition Date: May 7 - May 28, 2026
Closing Reception: May 28, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM | The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse (9351 - 118 Ave)

You are warmly invited to the closing reception of New Expressions: Jeff Collins Art Gallery

I am an artist living in Edmonton, Alberta with over 23 years of studio practice. My formal studies were at Red Deer College and the University of Alberta.  I have received many awards and recognition for my artwork, notably the Telus Courage to Innovate in the Arts Awards. In 2013/14 I served as the City's Edmonton inaugural Artist in Residence. My paintings have sold nationally and internationally. As an art educator and facilitator I strive to connect people to art and creativity, encouraging skill building, laughter and personal growth.

I am continually experimenting and learning new ways to express myself in the visual arts. I’ve painted landscapes in oil for most of my career as an artist, but I also love to paint still-lifes, figures and almost anything else I see and encounter in this natural world. I know that beauty is all around me, even when it is not so obvious. When I find it, I paint. If someone else feels something when they see my paintings I know I have been successful.

I am also fascinated with abstraction and using the properties of paint, including colour, texture etc., with the formal elements of painting and drawing to express emotions and captivate viewers. You must be a very good painter to create successful abstract paintings. I just like to play.

Spotlight Series: Rick St. Clair

The Carrot Spotlight Series presents Spotlight performer: Rick St. Clair – May 27

🎶 Live music starts at 7:00 pm | $20 Cover | Youth (12 & under) $10 | All Ages 🎶

The voice of Rick St. Clair resonates with the weight of a heart-worn and weathered soul. His songs reflect on life’s joys and hardships, and give voice to quiet truths. His musical sensibilities take root in the introspective lyricism of yesteryear’s folk, and the melancholic melodies of country and blues. Rick weaves a sonic tapestry of his own.

Rick has quietly honed his craft over the years, writing songs in the confines of solitude. His debut performance took place at the storied Mariposa Folk Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2025 – a milestone that marked the beginning of his outward musical journey.

On January 17th, 2026, Rick released his song Wildflowers, a deeply personal piece inspired by the physical and spiritual medicine found in wildflowers. His lyrics reflect on the harmony between land, people, and his Red River Métis identity.

When not performing or recording his music, Rick gives back to the community by hosting a concert series titled Listen Up, dedicated to fostering a space for emerging artists to perform for audiences who truly listen.

The Carrot Friday Nite Live presents Marty & Lil – May 8

🎶 Live music starts at 7:00 pm | $10 Cover | Youth (12 & under) $5 | All Ages 🎶

Marty and Lil Siltanen are a folk/country musical duo, singing original songs about love, life, and the landscapes that surround us. Performing together since 2007, their heartwarming songs entwine the people, the land, and their histories. Influenced by Canadian songwriters such as Lynn Miles, Kim Barlow, David Francey, Ron Hynes, and others, they often cover their idols songs in their performances. Marty and Lil’s harmonies are delightfully delicate, accompanied by artful acoustic guitar, mandolin, and djembe percussion. They have released two albums: "Down Farmers Road" (2023) and "It's A Long Way To Roam" (2007), and are working on a collection of songs inspired by the life and paintings of Tom Thomson in Ontario's Algonquin Park.
