This September, The Carrot is proud to present the Kaledio Family Arts Festival 2026 - Art Gallery featuring the works of Tim Rechner. All the artwork on display is available for purchase, with a portion of the sale supporting the festival.
Artist Statement:
I create abstract artwork instinctually. The aim is to create intense energy through abstract visual language. The artwork created aspires to be dynamic, vibrant and beautiful. The process is intuitive, direct and physical. I attempt to emulate the raw spontaneity and enthusiasm of a young child creating artwork. Artwork made by children is an important resource. My aesthetic draws upon 20th century artists such as de Kooning, Gorky, Matta, Pollock, Rothko, Joan Mitchell, Twombly, Rauschenberg, Riopelle, Borduas, Basquiat, Stan Brakhage and Cecily Brown. I use blind drawing techniques attempting to tap into the subconscious. There is a strong emphasis on an all over compositional flow enforced by a skeletal framework of assertively drawn lines. Emotive, bright, forceful colour combinations further intensify the surfaces. The second layer of tightly composed shapes sit atop of the automatiste first layer creating a collaboration between the conscious and subconscious minds.

Tim Rechner grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He has been living and creating artwork in Edmonton since 2001 after living in Vancouver, Halifax and Montréal. Throughout the last 24 years, he has established himself as a very committed Edmonton visual artist (painting/drawing) and has been very involved in the Edmonton arts community. He has exhibited prolifically in the Edmonton region including solo shows at The Works Festival, Art Gallery of St. Albert, The Front Gallery, Harcourt House, Scott Gallery, ARTERY, The Aviary and numerous other venues. He has participated in many group exhibitions at a variety of venues including multiple exhibitions at The Art Gallery of Alberta, Latitude 53 and many other galleries. Rechner has also participated in residencies and exhibits in Catalonia, Spain, Monterrey, Mexico, New York State and Miami, Florida. Rechner has been an instigator within many vibrant edmonton arts communities such as ArtsHab One, ArtsHub 118, Family Drugs, Draw-a-thon, the Aviary and Metro Cinema at The Garneau Theatre.
Rechner has curated a monthly film series at The Garneau Theatre for 13 years, and these screenings often feature live music beforehand. Rechner also curates the lobby gallery at the theatre which is called Metro Gallery. Tim Rechner has played drums in many Edmonton bands over the years and currently plays in three established Edmonton rock bands: Electricity for Everybody!, sKiN and Paint Drying.
